Editorial Reviews:

DEWEY is the heartwarming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa, as told by his owner and companion of nineteen years, Vicki Myron, the librarian who found him on a frigid January morning when he was abandoned as a kitten in the book drop slot. It is also the story of a remarkable small town, which burned down at the beginning of the Depression, only to rebuild itself, and which was almost shuttered during the farm crisis of the 1980s, before regrouping and rededicating itself to small town American values. Dewey's local charm and worldwide fame became a symbol of hope for this recovering town. Through Dewey's antics, we come to know and love many of the colorful and inspiring people of Spencer. But perhaps the most inspiring person in Spencer is Vicki Myron herself, a single mother who survived the bankruptcy of her family farm and working in a box factory to put two of her brothers through college to become one of the leaders of the Iowa library system. Dewey is one lovable, roguish cat who managed to transform an entire town and inspire people across the globe.

Summary: Great Holiday Gift
Comment: A lot of authors are promoting the giving of books this holiday season, and this is one of my choices. It's heartwarming, funny, poignant, all the while imparting wonderful lessons about what truly matters. Loved this one, and not just because I'm a "cat person" (hold the whiskers - and tail, too, for that matter).

Comment: I loved the story of Dewey. At first, I was irriated by the back story of Spencer and the Myron's history but as I read I wanted to know more and more about each. This is a story of hope and peace. I highly recommend it.

Comment: This was a touching story of GREAT LOVE between to "light Beings" I know this well as I have had the same uncondiontal love between my Riley (my cat of 15 1/2 yrs). Riley was well known by alot of people including Shirley Maclane, who spoke to him 2 day befour he passed. Love can never be destroyed.

Summary: Not Just for Animal Lovers! Even the jaded will appreciate this cat tail.
Comment: Don't let the fear of mush scare you away from Dewey! This book is not as mushy as it is real. The author describes the Iowa town vividly--you FEEL the cold, you feel the poor kitten shivering...For all of us, animal lovers or not, this book will make you feel like small town America is alive and well, and that it lives not only in small towns, but anyplace where people reach out to do the right thing, to care for the helpless who are unable to care for themselves. We take this trip with the people of Spencer, Iowa: We want to be right there with them, we want such a place to be our home as well. The story is even more amazing because it's true. It would be almost as evocative even if it was a work of fiction. Hope to hear more from author Vicki Myron.

Summary: Dewey, the library cat
Comment: Beautiful story for cat lovers. At times, I had to put the book down as it brought me to tears. Reminded me somewhat of cats I have loved in the past. I felt as if I also knew Dewey as the author writes in a very personal style. I think you would not enjoy the book if you do not love cats.
