Internationally acclaimed artists Thievery Corporation release their 5th studio album entitled Radio Retaliation on ESL Music. With Radio Retaliation Thievery Corporation raise the bar with a new cast of musical collaborators including; Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own go-go originator Chuck Brown. Also returning are long time co-conspirators Sleepy Wonder, LouLou, Notch, Zee, and Verny Varela.

Summary: Better than some efforts but.........
Comment: it no "Sounds Fromt Thievery Hifi" or "DJ Kicks" but not a clunker like Abductions and Reconstructions".About on par with "Mirror Conspiracy".They don't re-invent their wheel here by any means but it grooves.Little more of that "Tower Of Power" lite here with usual sitars and drum grooves from Brazil,Africa,Jamaica,India.Again not a re-invention by any means.Definitely more political lyrics as you might expect from the cover art.Worth picking up but I thought an MP3 for $5 was bargain compared with CD.I usually only download what's OOP on Jazz CD but the MP3 discount got me in.
Cheers
Chazz

Summary: Deja Vu all over again
Comment: This sounds allright, but really it is just a pleasant throwaway. It's a retread of all their other albums with nothing new to offer whatsoever. Same ole "chill out" style that had its heyday almost a decade ago now.

Summary: Retailiate the Past With the Present
Comment: Wow. I haven't been this excited about an album for a long time...at least an album in this current decade. I guess I am a little jaded about music because I was at one time surrounded by the classics and soon-to-be classics but this new recording by Thievery Corporation sends out a message to the listener's spirit; be new, be present, be open to the possibilities that are contained in this present.

Last night (November 4, 2008) proved to my soul that changes are taking place. There will be some changes that will be happy and some that may appear difficult, but we are going to be the people that usher in a new era of Love and Light.

What does this have to do with this CD?

Absolutely nothing.

I just wanted to say that.

Peace and Blessings,
john, 'the Light Coach'
:)

Summary: Sound Revolution !!!
Comment: An impeccable taste of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, they operate out of their Eighteenth Street Lounge club, marrying diverse beats with a parade of impressive left-field guest artists.
Thievery Corporation once again raises the bar with their incendiary and eagerly anticipated fifth independent studio album Radio Retaliation. Along with longtime microphone co-conspirators like Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Notch the outernational DJ and production duo are joined this time by a new cast of musical collaborators including Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own godfather of go-go Chuck Brown. With an uncompromising socio-political agenda and richly layered production touching upon the eclectic sounds of Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Radio Retaliation is Thievery Corporation's broadest and most progressive album yet! (From ESL's web site). Concerned about the economic crisis, illegal wars, the food resources situation and many other problems Thievery Corporation considers its duty to speak about it with its music and make the listeners wake up, look around and think of their life style. Yet the band did not make Radio Retaliation too dark for that matter concentrating all the information in the lyrics of several songs. While the elements of a smooth drum beat and dubbed echoes remain throughout this album, it's no holds barred when it comes to what's cool to sample. This album features a considerable array of musical styles within it's 56 minutes: afropop, dub reggae, jazz fusion, funk, bossa nova, Indian music.
On the title track, narcoleptic chatter Sleepy Wonder details his list of grievances, speaking for the entire corporation: "50,000 watts of Thievery hit them like poison darts/and watch the whole system what them build up fall apart." The two most important features are Femi Kuti's and Seu Jorge's; first, Kuti uses the track "Vampires" to call out African genocide throughout history (from Kinshasa to Darfur to Lagos to Malabo, Guinea), enjoy this is a great album to make think, dance and think again about the way of living the world today.
The packaging is great and so cool, made of recycled paper (100% of the box and the poster too), The poster-sized (inside) (huge and beautiful) fold-out contains some really nice cut-and-paste looking artwork, and all the song lyrics along with quotes from individuals like Albert Einstein, Charles Sullivan, Noam Chomsky, Mahatma Gandhi and more. The cover artwork featuring a masked Mexican Zapatista fighter says it all.

Summary: Dope!
Comment: TC returns with a fantastic album. I think it is their best since Mirror Conspiracy. It is stacked with great guests and musicians with great songs from start to finish.
No question, a must have for any TC fan.
